Gwinnett Stripers
Redbirds down Stripers in Lawrenceville
By Chloe Webb
LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia - Gwinnett’s streak of bad luck continues with their sixth straight loss. Game two of a six-game series between the Gwinnett Stripers and the Memphis Redbirds ends in a 10-7 victory for Memphis with a final score of 10-7.
Memphis quickly tacked on hits and runs to the Stripers’ starting pitcher Domingo Robles who went three and two-third innings. Robles allowed seven runs on seven hits. His counterpart, catcher Joe Hudson, spoke on the change from Robles’ last start versus tonight’s.
“He kind of stepped back a little bit and he was a little bit more timid and just trying to place it in there instead of being very aggressive.”
Robles’ struggles on the bump forced the Stripers to look towards their bullpen. Gwinnett cycled through three more pitchers in Connor Johnstone, Brian Moran and Roel Ramírez who combined for five and a third innings of relief with three earned runs.
The Redbirds put on an offensive showcase, tacking on 14 hits and 10 runs. Eight out of the nine players on the Redbirds starting roster drew at least one hit from the Stripers pitching staff.
After struggling to find his command in the first two innings where he gave up his only runs of the night, Memphis starter Matthew Liberatore settled into a scoreless groove. He finished the night going seven innings, two earned runs on three hits, striking out ten in the process. Liberatore earns his third win of the season, bringing his record to 3-0.
Besides a Yolmer Sánchez sacrifice fly and a Hudson home run in the first two innings, there was little to celebrate offensively for Gwinnett. Their scoring drought finally ended in the eighth with a Sánchez double, bringing Forrest Wall across the plate.
A ray of hope struck Coolray Field in the bottom of the ninth when Wall blasted a grand-slam over the right field wall. Despite the momentum shift within the ballpark, reliever Grant Black was able to squash a Gwinnett comeback, finishing off Braden Shewmake and Sánchez to end the game.
The Stripers’ manager Matt Tuiasosopo is focusing on tomorrow’s matchup to reset the energy in the clubhouse.
“The goal is for these guys to get a good night’s rest and come back with a positive mindset and enter the building just ready to attack the game and the day.”
Game three of the Memphis and Gwinnett matchup will start on April 13 at 7:05 p.m. where the Stripers are aiming to win their first game since April 4. Memphis looks to repeat tonight’s dominant performance as they continue the series in Lawrenceville.
